Dr. Kenneth Ryan

Director of Education

After completing Medical School and surgical residency at the University of Iowa Ken worked as a board-certified surgeon in private practice until being enticed back into his other passion for automated systems. He is one of the founders of the Center for Applied Mechatronics at Alexandria Technical and Community College. He founded the first PLCopen-certified, university-based IEC 61131-3 curriculum and training center in North America (one of only four such centers globally). In addition to periods as president of SERCOS North America; member of the PLCopen board of directors; founder and director of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Automation and Chair of a National Science Foundation - Advance Technology Education Committee he has taught IEC 61131-1 programming skills to hundreds of professionals at companies like Eaton, Bosch Rexroth, Danaher, Parker, Yaskawa, Liebherr and Hyundai Motor Company.
Ken lives in Minnesota in the U.S. with his wife of 30 years. They have 2 children. He is an instrument-rated private pilot and has a passion for cross country travel in his Bellanca Super Viking. He also enjoys woodworking, skiing, hiking, SCUBA, skydiving and is an avid runner.
Ken developed the only remote delivery system for IEC 61131-3 programming when he founded the Remote Automation Management Platform (RAMP) at the Center for Applied Mechatronics. BE.educated is an exciting extension of this pioneering work and focuses on dynamic, asynchronous delivery of quality technology learning content.
“To this day I still teach anatomy and physiology at our institution. One of the greatest rewards is watching a student’s “dawning” understanding as complex concepts of the human organism yield to delivery of a practical, system-based curriculum. I bring this same passion to the explanation of complex technical systems like automation. After all… the human organism is the ultimate dynamic, self-regulating system. Almost all of our technology systems are designed to imitate this marvel in one respect or another.”
